Thirty years disappeared at the lake last night- suddenly I was sixteen again! STYX performed at Mariner's Landing, the second act in their Summer Concert Series. We arrived early in the afternoon and decided to get a bite to eat at The Pointe Restaurant. The band was just unloading the bus and we actually said hi to one of the band members on the way in. (I was still an adult at this point).
The organizers hold a Pre-Concert Party starting at 4pm. For $15, there are appetizers, cash bar, live music, free fold up chairs and a shuttle back and forth to the concert. We got our pass, listened to the music, ate a little food and watched the boats on beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. Not a bad way to spend a summer afternoon in Virginia.
At six pm, a shuttle arrived to start taking people over to the concert location. Once we got to the location (the field across from the entrance to Mariners Landing) we knew we had made a wise choice; the general admission line was long. We were taken right up to the stage and were able to get DEAD CENTER, FRONT ROW SEATS!!!! I couldn't believe our good fortune. We were six feet from the stage. PAY THE $15.
The opening band is local TK421 out of the Roanoke, Virginia area. They had quite a following and they were excellent. They played for almost an hour and after a short break, STYX came onstage!
Oh My Gosh.... Tommy Shaw was right there! RIGHT THERE!!!!
After two hours of screaming like a teenager, I was hoarse but did manage to yell "throw me a pick!" ( I got one) "throw me a photo!" ( I got one). I was smilin' all night!
All good things must come to an end and after the performance we took the little train back up to the shuttle and back to Mariner's Landing. There's still time to take in an awesome concert under the stars:
Lonestar August 16 (okay, you missed this one)
Grand Funk Railroad August 22
Blake Shelton August 23
TobyMac August 28
Diamond Rio August 29

Great PICS! Looks like a great time....
How cool is that? Looks like you had a great time Debbie...
TK421 put on a great show for a local band. They've played Cattle Annie's a few times (where you can also see some great national acts (rock & country)). I'm torn about going to the Wine Festival at Parkway Marina or Blake Shelton on AUg 23rd, but I think I'm going to give the concerts a break that do to do wine tasting.
Debbie: Did you hold up your lighters at the end of the show? (Do they even do that anymore? Does anyone have lighters anymore?) Looks like we're in the wrong biz...between Madonna looking so great at 50, and the guys from STYX still lookin'--dare I say--hot...maybe we shoulda been rock stars!
I'm glad you had a great time and I love the post!!
Ruthmarie, it was awesome!
Michael, there are advantages to being older, we have more concert (and t shirt) money than when we were teenagers!
Betty, are you local? I'll have to keep an eye on Cattle Annie's schedule, we're only 15 minutes away. This was the first time I've heard TK421 play live, love their song Disengaged. I think we're going to the Wine Festival. I'd love to meet up, thanks for commenting!
Debbie: First of all, does Tommy Shaw ever look any older? He looks like a kid! Secondly, it sounds like you had a great time. A great way to end the summer!
Kim!! I did a survey on the bus,- When did you graduate from High School?. The answers ranged from 1972-1984. WE know what to do with our bic lighters!LOL!!! I'm telling you, I was a screaming fool, it was a blast! Thanks for stopping by!
This definitely looks like a good time...can't wait until the boys get older though to start doing more fun stuff.
Chris Ann, He looked pretty good to me!LOL!! We were SO close I could read his tattoo!!!! Sigh....
Hi Naoma! I've had a hard time with the girls growing up and both going to college this year. But, this is one of the benefits of older children. We have the time (and money) to spend on stuff like this now! I hope you are all doing well and getting some sleep at night.
Debbie, Looks like you had a great time. Nice post. Great pictures.
What a great event -- I loved the pictures in your blog. I felt like I was there too! I am glad you had such an enjoyable afternoon and evening.
Debbie,I feel like I was there. Great post.

Hi Joan!, thanks, we are so fortunate to be able to go. I'm really glad to see more events coming to the lake.
Hi Sylvie, thank you! I still love STYX, nothing like having a bad day and cranking the old tunes!
Hi Debbie this must have been a great show. I have a live CD of Styxx and it is awesome. I think they actually sound better live.
Just wanted to say a quick thanks for complimenting us TK guys. Very much appreciated!

DIANE RICE!!!!! How are you my friend? I'm so glad you're back, I hope it won't be a short visit; we've missed your voice. Thanks for stopping by!
Debbie, see, you just want to rub it in. LOL. Just kidding. Glad that you had fun.
Danny, would you believe I tried to call you from the concert and my battery died! I really wanted you to be there too!

Thanks for supporting live music!
Wayne
Debbie, I would have so been there too. But, alas, I was sitting at home helping the load furniture.
Hi Wayne! Thanks so much for posting the links. I'll definitely contact The Roanoke Times. You guys put on a great show and I grateful we've got events like this so close to home.
Danny, we took off from work early after a very long, stressful week and it was the best thing we could have done.
Debbie - I am NOT promising to stay long for i am very much involved. I do promise to bob in and out occasionally. You look terrific!!!
Debbie, stress relief is something that a lot of us need to learn how to manage,
Diane, I'll take as much of your time as I can get!!!LOL!! No pressure!
Danny, you know I have trouble with juggling it all. But, we've been taking more time for ourselves and it's helped.
It sounds like so much fun. It is good to let go and feel young again. I think I need to go to a concert!
I would have loved it, STYX is on my music widget for a great reason!
Julie, it was a blast! One of the TK-421 band members posted some youtube videos and I can hear myself screaming, what a hoot!LOL!!
Ronald, they were great, I love turning the tunes up when I'm in the car, their sound is still great!
Debbie. it sounds like you had a great time. I need to remember how long it's been since I've "screamed like a teenager!"
Lara, we're scrambling to get Jimmy Buffett tickets for this Saturday. Middle age crazy!!!
I think it is great when you get a chance to act like a teenager. I spend so much time being a responsible adult I forget how much fun there is out there to enjoy. I have been trying to be conscious of chances to enjoy a child and their games or an adventure.
Julie, I couldn't be irresponsible if I wanted to, but I love having fun and am learning to live in the moment.
Debbie, sounds like an amazing night! Glad you got to see your band. I finally was able to see The Eagles in May and they were the band that I had always wanted to see my whole life so I know how you feel. It looks like they have a lot of good shows at that arena!

Lisa, how great is that? We were fortunate to see several groups when we were kids, and it's nice that some of the groups we loved from the 70's and 80's are still touring. I'd love to see the Eagles! Thanks for commenting.
Also, thanks for commenting on my post!
Hi Pam, we were so thrilled to get to see STYX so close to home. I'm happy to write about the great events and businesses in my community. Thanks for commenting my friend!
