In & Around Lynchburg, VA : Negotiating a Contract of Another Kind- Our New Tenant

Negotiating a Contract of Another Kind- Our New Tenant

Apparently I have planted a smorgasbord in our backyard. A buffet of delicious and tasty treats the neighborhood wildlife can't resist. Deer-off works if you keep applying, but we needed to negotiate better terms of use of the backyard when even the marigolds were disappearing. So:

Owner  agrees to provide tenant with plums from the tree, any fallen fruit or vegetables from the garden and lifetime access to the fishpond- (for drinking purposes only).

Deer Outside Bedroom Window

In return, tenant agrees not to eat any flowering bush, shrub or flower.

Deer In Back Yard

On premises security will be employed if tenant does not fulfill the terms of the contract.

So have they read the terms of the lease and signed on the dotted line.  Deer don't often read the fine print which is a problem.

Debbie if this works for you I will have to adopt similar terms; my garden has been under attack.

Debbie- he does not look like he is willing to take no for an answer. Maybe you can get him on income?

Debbie, My sister has a whole herd of those tenants.  They tend to be demanding tenants.

My Siberians pretty much keep the deer away.  However, some people say their gardens are just one giant salad - these guys eat a LOT of food.

Oh deer me. While these guys are pretty to look at, they can be a hugh pain in the garden...

Hi Pat, Reading the lease: we have the same problem with several of our human tenants!

Jennifer, I decided not to fight it anymore, there's plenty of food for the wildlife and I'll just try to keep them away from the plants we'd like to enjoy!

Hi Wallace, Thanks! Animals are going to come into the yard. You have to have a sense of humor about it.....

Hi Laura, My little dog takes his job seriously! He's rewarded with a treat every time he protects us!

Ellie, the enjoyment of seeing the deer is enough of a return...he used to come by with his mom earlier in the year.

Hi Marchel, we're fortunate it's just one deer, we drove through the neighborhood last night and there were four in another yard!

Hi Ruthmarie! Yes, I'm sure  your dog is a force to be reckoned with. Duncan doesn't know he' all of 16 pounds, this is his turf and the deer better not cross it, lol...

Hi Michael, I agree, I'm trying to direct the path so he's not coming right up to the house. We throw all of the veggies and fruit into the woods. I'm hoping it's going to help...

Oh my -- I may just have to train my "attack cat" to stand guard.  So far this year we have had 1 black bear cub, 1 moose and a dozen or so deer!    The deer have visited before, but we have no idea what is attracting the black bear or or the moose!

We stopped trying to have a vegetable garden years ago...The critters outsmarted us at every turn! Felt like we should just put plastic bag dispensers & scales next to the garden and make it easier for them (although, from the looks of it, we had made it plenty easy for them!). Adorable post...Great way to start my a.m.!

Hello Deb!!!!!!!! I did have some such tenants myself some years back. They kept the most precious growing things ......pruned - off with the heads of spring tulips, delectable budding roses, green beans sheared down so evenly you'd think a mower had driven over .........

..fine job on many other garden plants as well!

Many Blessings
