I wanted to clean the cabinet under the kitchen sink. I just wasn't planning on doing it today.
My Friend Murphy decided to pay me a visit this morning- I was about to make coffee when I saw the puddle of water on the kitchen floor. I was hoping it was from a melted ice cube but no such luck. I opened the cabinet under the sink to find the TINY TITAN compact hot water heater hissing and the floor of the cabinet soaking wet. This little heater only holds 2 1/2 gallons of water but this morning it's seemed like 100.
Things like this always happen when my husband's out of town, so the first thing I did was unplug the unit. One surprise a day is enough of a shock. My husband installed several shut off valves so I was able to cut the source of water going to the tank. I've also turned the dishwasher on several times to empty the tank faster- in theory. (Home inspectors, anything else I should be doing?)
We built the house on a slab and our kitchen is a good 50 feet from the hot water heater. It was taking forever to get hot water to the kitchen sink so my husband installed the compact hot water heater. It has different temperature settings, is a reliable source of hot water and for six years it's worked well. It's a great solution for our home and we'll get a replacement. I'm fortunate to have been home to catch this. Remember to turn your water main off when you leave on vacation or if you're going out of town for the holidays. Now I need to go find the fan- we don't want mold issues too. Keep smilin'.

I have never heard of compact water heaters... I have heard of tankless water heaters that give hot water on demand....
I am sure you will get this situation taken care of, sis... did you call your hubby to see if you have done all the steps to getting this thing fixed before you take it out?

Hey Alex, I did call the hubs and he was proud of me apparently I did all I could. I'll use another sink til he gets home and have him call the manufacturer. Our regular hot water heater died and they replaced it, it had a 10 year warranty so we may get lucky with this one. Thanks for your input!
Hi Debbie - We have one installed in one of our tenant's places, so i am familiar with it. Seems to break every 2 years so you got one with a much longer life! I am glad it was remedied for you!

You sure did do a mighty fine job of handing the problem with that little ole compact water heater, my friend. Those compact water heater sure come in handy for folks.
great post about a very useful device for saving water. I don't know if they save any energy, but running the hot water for half a minute waiting for it to get hot can't be economical of either water or energy. I did see a product recently that diverted not-yet-hot water back into the system until the water was finally hot enough to use. I haven't seen one of those in action, yet, so I don't know if they actually work well.
Just FYI, whenever I leave town, something breaks for my wife. It must be a natural law.

I had EXACTLY the same problem with this same water heater last week. For some strange reason, whenI walked over to the kitchen sink, I had a big puddle of water on the floor. I heard a a hissing sound, so I opened the door and there was a thin stream of water spewing out of the top of the heater and dripping out of the control panel on the from. I turned it off, unplugged it and then yesterday I took it to a plumber's office to see if it could be fixed... NOPE ! The water heater is only 4 years old, now I have to purchase a new one and have a plumber come out to run the new lines because the newer Tiny Titan water heaters have a vertical inlet versus the old horizontal inlet... Big Pain & EXPENSE !!!
Every water heater eventually leaks. Maybe it is because of the rusty tank, or connections, condensation and many other reasons.
