We made a fresh pot of hot chocolate and bundled up in the car to enjoy the Christmas lights in Bedford County, Virginia last night. One of ours stops was at The National Elks Home in Bedford, VA. This has been a family favorite since our girls were little and it really puts you in the Christmas spirit.

The Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks purchased the Hotel Bedford located in Bedford, Virginia in 1902. This beautiful home is located on 200 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Elk National Home was dedicated in 1903 as a retirement community for retired Elks members and their spouses.

Directions: Take Route 460, midway between Roanoke and Lynchburg to the city of Bedford, turn onto Peaks Rd and follow the ELKS HOME signs.

What a great way to spend an afternoon in Bedford County, Virginia! The 13th annual Chili Cook-off took place today at the Sedalia Center in Big Island. Even with an overcast sky and threat of rain, there was a great turnout and an impressive variety of Chili to sample with 35 participating teams. Music was provided by Work Release and the rain held off long enough for us to try every one of the chili's. Check The Sedalia Center's website for upcoming events.

The Peaks of Otter Lodge is located on the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway in Bedford, Virginia.

The lodge is beautifully set on the banks of Abbott Lake at the base of Sharp Top Mountain. This is a favorite destination for a special dinner and is a scenic 45 minute drive from Lynchburg. You can take a stroll around the lake or peruse the gift shops before dinner in the Lake View Restaurant. Enjoy an after dinner drink at the Sharp Top Cocktail Lounge or in the bar. Stay overnight at the lodge and enjoy a hearty breakfast before hiking the 1.5 mile trail up Sharp Top, one of the three peaks that make up the Peaks of Otter. In non-winter months, you can take the Sharp Top bus to the top as well.
