2009 Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival

The annual Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival will be held on September 26-27 at the LakeWatch Spa and Resort. Discount tickets are available for sale until June 1:

Tasting Tickets $15

Designated Driver Tickets $10

After June 1, advance-discount tickets will be $18 for Taster Tickets and $12 for Designated Driver. At the gate, Taster Tickets will be $22 and Designated Driver, $15.

The SML Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the wine festival and will accept PayPal for internet ticket sales. Tickets can be purchased at the SML Visitor’s Center. For more information, check out their website at www.VisitSmithMountainLake.com

There are five wineries on the Bedford County Wine Trail in Virginia. Recently we stopped in at the Savoy Lee Winery in Huddleston on the way to Smith Mountain Lake. This is a small family winery that opened in September of 2005 but they produce a wide variety of award winning wines.

Johnson's Orchards and Peaks of Otter Winery is a family owned and operated business. The current farm was established in 1919. The Johnson family have been in Bedford, Virginia since the 1700's.

I stopped in recently and had a pleasant visit with Shannon Johnson- he is a hoot! They have been producing 25 different fruit wines since 1995. We had a wine tasting in their lovely shop and brought several bottles home. Peaks of Otter has won numerous awards for their various wines and will host the Bedford Wine Festival in July.

The farm is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and at the foot of the Peaks Of Otter. (The family owned Sharp Top Mountain til the 1970's - when they were advised it would be a good business decision to sell it). The farm consists of over 200 acres planted with approximately 7500 apple trees; almost 200 different varieties. They developed the ‘Gold Nugget' in honor of the Beale Treasure. Apple picking is an annual event in our family and we love to go to Johnson's in September.

The Orchard and Winery are located approximately 8 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and 7 miles from the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford.

Hickory Hill Vineyards, Smith Mountain Lake

The winter is a quieter time at Smith Mountain Lake. If you've seen the movie What About Bob?, you've already been introduced to a lake in Central Virginia and know how beautiful it is. We don't see as many boaters or visitors to the state park this time of year and some businesses do close down.

One business that is open year round is Hickory Hill Winery. Located in the town of Moneta (in Bedford County), Hickory Hill Winery produces a variety of wines and they will be holding a special event February 16-17 their Winter Whites Open House - 11:00am to 5:00pm.   All white wines will be on sale, coffee and hot chocolate will be available to warm you up on the inside. Or you can brave the chill outside and see what grapevine pruning is all about. If you'll be in the area, stop by.
