Giving Back: Forest Lions Club Donates to the Jefferson Forest Wrestling Team

On January 21, 2011, five members of the Forest Lions Club along with three of their spouses attended the Jefferson Forest Wrestling Team’s Annual Spaghetti Dinner and Auction held in the fellowship hall of the Mountain View United Methodist Church. Lion John Wilkins was introduced and made remarks on behalf of the Lions including an invitation for attendees to visit the new Forest Lions web site. He also announced the upcoming “Community Kite Flight” which will be held Saturday, March 19 at the Forest Youth Athletic Park.

Lion Tom Crush (Pictured) presented a check for $200 to members of the Jefferson Forest Wrestling Team. The Lions and the wrestlers have a relationship dating back to 2010 when the wrestling team offered to assist the Lions in their annual sale of Christmas Tree Sale.

Not Much Snow In Bedford County..... But Watch Out For The Black Ice

Growing up in New England I was use to snow. Lots of snow. As a kid I prayed we'd get at least six inches overnight, otherwise I was WALKING to school the next day. Plows worked around the clock and by morning the roads were usually cleared. Until the next storm.

Snow in Forest VA

We don't generally get that much snow in Central Virginia and we don't have near the volume of snow removal equipment. Most communities will err on the side of caution if there's a hint that snow's a comin' and entire counties will close their schools. One of the biggest winter dangers I've encountered since living in Virginia is driving on roads with Black Ice.

Black Ice is a thin coat of ice that forms from mist, light rain and melted snow. It's usually worse in the early morning and late at night when temperatures are lower. It can be shiny or glossy and look like wet pavement  and it's very dangerous.

If you absolutely must drive during bad weather, slow down and leave plenty of space between vehicles -and be careful not to slip going out to get the mail.
